Before I tell you how to write a song, I’ll first explain to you what’s keeping you from writing one. Suppose I gave you a number like 978.44 and asked you to divide it by 3 without using a calculator. You’ll probably write the figure down and start using long division, dealing with one digit at a time. When it comes to writing a song, the same thing applies. Your brain understands music; it’s very capable, but we don’t understand that when you tell it to write an entire song without assistance, the workload is too heavy. Instead of asking it to write you a song, you should break the request into much smaller tasks. Start with stringing together a few notes, then add some more. Then try the whole melody to see if there’s harmony. As long as you’re not tone-deaf, you have the potential to write music.
